Sunday June 11, 2023, the Ugandan Catholic Community in Boston (UCCB) will celebrate the feast Of Uganda Martyrs in commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs murdered for their faith. It will be the 20th anniversary of the commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs Day by theUCCB in the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts, USA.  The Holy Mass to mark the event will take place at St. Mary’s Parish in Waltham, Massachusetts, starting at 12:00PM. Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of the Archdiocese of Kampala will preside over the holy mass. The hosts will later hold a grand dinner for all guests at Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center located at 1657 Worcester Rd. Framingham. Celebrated under the theme “to pray that they may all be one’” (John 17:20-21), the commemoration is an open invitation to all faithfuls.

Boston, Massachusetts—The Archbishop of the archdiocese of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere will grace the commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs’ Day as the main celebrant, the Ugandan Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Boston announced here recently. Archbishop Ssemogerere heads one of the Catholic dioceses in Uganda where seven Martyrs were born and subsequently murdered for their faith.

The commemoration of the feast Of Uganda Martyrs will take place on Sunday June 11th, 2023, starting with mass at 12:00pm at St. Mary Parish located at 133 School St. Waltham, MA 02451. The celebration to honor the Uganda Martyrs is earmarked every year on the second Sunday of June in the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts. “This will be the second time the community is gathering in person since the pandemic to continue building our identity as an immigrant community under the theme ‘to pray that they may all be one’ (John 17:20-21),” a press release issued by Ms. Lydia Nakimuli, the secretary of the Ugandan Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts said.

This year’s celebration will also mark the 20th anniversary of the commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs Day by the Ugandan Catholic Community in Boston held in Waltham City, Massachusetts in the Archdiocese of Boston. The commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs will be preceded by nine days of prayers and a talk about the Uganda Martyrs from June 2nd- 10th 2023 at St. Mary’s Parish Waltham.

The celebration will also be marked with the laying of a foundation for the construction of an alter for the Uganda Martyrs in St. Mary church, Waltham, MA.

This year’s celebration will also mark 59 years since 22 Uganda Martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul V1 in 1964 in Rome, Italy. Every year, the Archdiocese of Kampala hosts pilgrims who flock Namugongo Martyrs' shrine in the archdiocese of Kampala to commemorate the feast of the Uganda Martyrs. The seven martyrs from Kampala Archdiocese were St. Gyaviira Mayanja Musoke, St. James Buuzabalyawo Kalimba Ssebayigga, St. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe, St. Luke Baanabakintu, St. Mbaaga Tuzinde, St. Mugagga Lubowa and St. Mukasa Kiriwawanvu.

According to the press statement, the Ugandan Catholic Community in Boston will later in the evening host their guests to a grand dinner at Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center located at 1657 Worcester Rd. Framingham, USA 01701.

Meanwhile, fundraising drives are ongoing for the successful celebrations and any monetary and voluntary assistance is welcome.
